EasterWineGlassEggsForget Halloween. Easter is where it’s at when it comes to candy. Folks get so excited, they give it up. Yes, that’s right. Chocolate is the most common indulgence given up for Lent, the 40 days pre-Easter where true strength and will power are put to the test. If you can hardly wait for Peter Cottontail to deliver a basket full of candy confections to your door on Easter morning, then you’ll need an activity to keep you busy until then. We’ve got just the thing. Go shopping for these amazing wines to pair with your favorite Easter treat! The flavors marry perfectly and will be well worth the 40-day wait.

Milk Chocolate Bunny & Traslascuestas from Ribera del Duero

The juicy berry flavor of this red wine is the perfect complement to the decadent milk chocolate. Ribera del Duero was named wine region of the year in 2012 by Wine Enthusiast Magazine. The terrain couldn’t be more perfect for wine growing and the Traslascuestas (made from Tempranillo) are filled with dark fruit, tobacco and vanilla flavors which elevate your ordinary chocolate bunny to extraordinary places.

Reese’s Peanut Butter Egg & Protos Tinto Fino Protos

Tinto Fino is a great introduction to the wines from Ribera Del Duero. 100% Tempranillo, it’s a wine that is ruby in color, full of ripe berry aromas with a slight touch of oak and full tannins and flavor that linger. It’s the perfect match a peanut butter egg’s rich and velvety texture and flavor.

Skittles & Bugey Cardon

The full bright flavor of wine made with the Gamay grape is the ideal complement to the bursting fruit flavor of Skittles candy. Master Sommelier Michael Engelmann recommends Patrick Bottex Bugey-Cardon. It’s a champagne like sparkling rose from Bugey and surprisingly low in alcohol (a trend for 2015) without being low on flavor.

Cadbury Crème Eggs & Port

If you can get through the season without at least one Cadbury Crème Egg, you’ve got a lot more will power than most of the country. Easter’s most iconic candy egg is full of sweet cream that is as much about texture as it is flavor. Instead of trying to combat the richness, embrace it with a smooth, big red sweet wine like Port. California is producing some amazing Zinfandel port-style wines if you . Terra d’Oro Zinfandel Port is a favorite because you can transition it easily from appetizers or snacks (Stilton cheese, walnuts) to dessert (Crème Eggs, chocolate dipped orange peels, chocolate kisses…).

Peeps & Prosecco

We saved the best for last with this one. People either love or hate Peeps. Basically just a sugar-covered marshmallow, they have become synonymous with the holiday and their release is a cause for celebration for Peeps lovers everywhere. Cue the cork! The effervesce and crispness of a slightly dry slightly sweet Prosecco (or Cava if you prefer) will produce a party in your mouth. The crunch of the sugar, the bursting of bubbles…excuse us, we’ve got a little yellow chick just begging to have it’s head bitten off.
